CW Receives Standing Ovation at the WWII Museum

Charles “CW” is a 93 year old WWII veteran who currently resides at the Sterling House of Temple in Texas. CW was in the United States Navy from 1939- 1945, serving most of his time on board a destroyer called the USS Russell (DD-414). CW and his fellow Navy shipmates were in Pearl Harbor the day after the attack, but were immediately sent to the South Pacific for retaliation against the enemy forces. CW also fought in the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, receiving one battle star for his valiant actions during this monumental battle. Upon being discharged from the Navy in 1945, CW had reached the rank of a Chief Petty Officer, and had received 9 battle stars throughout the years of his service to our country.

CW loves learning about WWII and the historical context of his service, and Wished to travel to New Orleans, LA in order to visit the WWII Museum that they have built in honor of the thousands of brave men and women who sacrificed everything to ensure our independence. In particular, CW is most interested in seeing the USS Tang, a WWII submarine located at the museum. CW, who was stationed on board a destroyer during his service, always wondered what the life of a submariner looked like.

Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale were honored to have the opportunity to fulfill this war hero’s wish to see the WWII Museum in New Orleans, LA. CW and his son Craig traveled to the WWII Museum in April of 2015 where they had the opportunity to tour the entire museum. Since Charles was mostly intrigued by the USS Tang Experience, he began his journey at the submarine exhibit. The WWII Museum gave him a very warm welcome and even recognized him before the USS Tang movie showing.
