Carolyn Reunites with Best Friend Yvonne

An African American woman smiles with hands on hips

Sixty-seven-year-old Carolyn has lived a life with many ups and downs. From a rough childhood, to struggling with addiction and homelessness, Carolyn has pushed through every adversity she has faced, though she says she couldn’t have done it without the help of her good friend and lifelong advocate, Yvonne.

Yvonne, 65, was there for her friend Carolyn, even while Yvonne was stationed at an Army base in Germany. Carolyn shared, “My friend Yvonne never changed her attitude or anything about me, she never put me down.” It was the type of friendship that made both women feel like they were not alone, and that they could make it through anything.

Carolyn met Yvonne in business school in 1975, and the two forged a friendship stronger than distance and struggle.

“I met Carolyn about 35 years ago,” Yvonne said, “Our children were still babies and we became really good friends,” she continued, “When my husband died, she was very supportive. I love her to death, and I love her kids.”

Both women have always wanted to visit one another at Yvonne’s home in Georgia. “I always tell her to come see me,” said Yvonne, “but she never had a good paying job and never been on a plane.”

“I want to go and spend some time with her because she’s always been there for me,” Carolyn said, “Just to see her and spend time with her.”

In Partnership with GHC Housing Partners, Wish of a Lifetime was honored to reunite these two best friends on a warm Saturday morning in Augusta. Carolyn and Yvonne were delighted to see each other and couldn’t help but tear up at their reunion. Wish of a Lifetime is proud to celebrate this incredible friendship and the two generous and caring women who serve as an inspiration to each of us to always be there for others.

“A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.”
