Eusebia Reunites with Her Family in Peru
Eusebia was born and raised in Peru. Those who know her well would tell you about her open, loving heart and her value of family above all else.
Although she never expected to leave Peru, Eusebia uprooted her life to move to the United States when she realized that her daughter needed help raising her two children. Although it was hard to leave behind her family, friends, and community, she knew it was the right thing to do to support her daughter. That was almost 30 years ago, and Eusebia has yet to have the opportunity to return to Peru since.
Living in the United States, Eusebia supported her family by working at a daycare. When she retired, she continued to help others by volunteering to babysit. As the years have passed, she has maintained connections with her loved ones in Peru through long phone calls and Facetime dates.
In 2015, Eusebia’s daughter tragically passed away after losing her battle against cancer. Eusebia and her grandson Gabriel were the only remaining family in the United States. In this dark time of grief, Eusebia longed for home even more.
When we heard Eusebia’s story, we were honored to help her fulfill her wish to reconnect with loved ones and return to Peru. “Just to be able to hold my family again would bring me incredible joy in such a difficult time,” she shared.
At age 86, Eusebia regained a sense of hope while anticipating her visit, helping her move forward through her grief. And finally, accompanied by her grandson Gabriel, Eusebia traveled to Lima, Peru, to reunite with her family and friends.
Upon seeing her family for the first time in the airport, Eusebia burst into tears. It’s hard to describe Eusebia’s joy being surrounded by family, embracing, crying, and laughing together in person after over 30 years apart.
A joyful community of loved ones, including her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom she met for the very first time, greeted her with open arms.
Experiencing the sights and sounds of the place she once called home brought back many warm childhood memories. During her visit, Eusebia’s family took her to a rural town in Peru, where she was surprised by a reunion with her sister, with whom she had lost touch. It was a touching, emotional moment for everyone.
Eusebia shared that her wish felt like a miracle. After a time of great grief, she felt a light shining through the darkness. These meaningful memories she made with her family in Peru will last a lifetime—something Eusebia can treasure regardless of their distance.
Gabriel shared that he hopes his beloved grandmother’s wish story will inspire others to “love and do more for their elders because, after all, they are the ones that got us here in life.”
