Robert Commemorates the 11th Armored Division

Robert, 90, is a current resident at Brookdale Place at Fall Creek in Indiana. Robert has always been proud of the Army Division that he served in during WWII and the Battle of the Bulge- the 11th Armored Division. The 11th Armored Division was disbanded on August 15, 1945. Because of this occurrence, they formed an association dedicated to this division. Robert would attend reunions that the 11th Armored Division Association would put together for the brave soldiers. Unfortunately, due to health and mobility restrictions, the men of the 11th Armored Division are currently unable to travel to have another reunion. Robert’s Wish of a Lifetime was to be able to honor his division and tour the Indianapolis War Memorial and Museum.

Robert served his country for over 3 years, and after the division was disbanded, he tried very hard to keep in touch with the other men that were a part of this division as well. Robert did not stop serving his country after the War- he also began extensive volunteer work through many different organizations. Up until a few years ago, Robert had been actively involved in his church and volunteering his time there whenever he could through their events and church services. Robert also served as a member of the Kiwanis Club for several years. He was also on the Board of the Crawfordsville Historical Society and volunteered his time through Habitat for Humanity for a number of years.

When asked, Robert will state, “being in the service was one of the major accomplishments of my life”. Due to his and the 11th Armored Division’s valiant actions that were taken during WWII, Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale were excited to send Robert and his daughter, and grandson to the Indianapolis World Memorial and Museum on a date that marks the day the Battle of the Bulge began in 1944- December 16th. Robert, his daughter Marilee, grandson, and friends from the community toured the Indiana War Memorial and Museum and were able to enjoy a formal Military Ceremony that honored Robert and the rest of the brave men from the 11th Armored Division and the other soldiers that fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Robert was presented with a Brick of Remembrance that will be placed at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis, IN, in January 2014.
