Therman S. from Brookdale Sparks, has always wished he could climb aboard the hot air balloons he sees floating around Nevada. When he was a young boy, a hot air balloon landed on his driveway. Ever since that day, Therman has been fascinated with hot air balloons and dreamt of riding in one. Now at 94 years old, Therman hopes to continue to challenge myths around aging and encourage everyone to live life to the fullest. Therman said, “Even with my age, I want to enjoy new experiences. Doing stuff like riding in a hot air balloon keeps me young and active.”
Therman was 20 years old when he was drafted into the military. He served for almost two years and intercepted incoming signals. After his time in service, he spent the remainder of his life devoted to his family and volunteering every chance he got. From raising and showing dogs to working with the Volunteer Fire Department, Therman found a way to involve himself in his community in every way he could.
Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale Senior Living were thrilled to send Therman, his friend, Arlene, and son-in-law, James, on a hot air balloon ride on May 20, 2017. Therman imagined that riding in a hot air balloon would be like “being free. You’re up there and it’s quiet [as you] drift along.” He experienced just that and enjoyed the peaceful ride. Brookdale Sparks Resident Programs Coordinator, Laurie, said “Arlene and Therman were just glowing talking about [the wish].”
