Bill Goes to UNC Men’s Basketball Practice

William “Bill” S., 85, has been an avid University of North Carolina men’s basketball fan for over 42 years. Bill claims that he is the Tar Heels “oldest fan” and is constantly representing his team by wearing his UNC gear around the community. Up until a year ago he was a season ticket holder for decades, but due to his declining health and memory impairment he decided to sell these tickets within the family. It has been nearly two years since Bill has gone to a UNC Men’s Basketball game and he wished to have some sort of opportunity to immerse himself in his passion of the team once more by attending one of their practices.

Bill’s wife was the President of their local Mobile Meals for numerous years. He spent many years volunteering with his wife to deliver meals to individuals that were home-bound. Both of their lives were centered on helping others through this program for many years and holds some of his favorite memories. Currently Bill resides at Brookdale High Point North Memory Care in North Carolina, and although there are times when he has difficulty remembering day to day activities- his love for the UNC Men’s Basketball team never fades.

Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale were excited that the Tar Heels allowed Bill, Mary (his caregiver), and Denita (Resident Program Coordinator) the opportunity to watch them practice on February 23, 2017 at the Dean Smith Center. Bill had the opportunity to watch the team perform drills. “Gee whiz it was great”Bill stated when asked how his day went. The team really appreciated Bill’s long time dedication to the team, they have even offered to let him come back to more practices in the future.
