Dot Learns to Play Piano

Dorothy “Dot” H., 86, of High Point Place in High Point, NC, has had a passion for music since she was a child. Growing up during the Great Depression as the eighth of ten children, she unfortunately never had the chance to learn about her favorite instrument—the piano. Dorothy was the only one of her siblings who finished high school. After briefly attending Radford Teacher’s College in Virginia, Dorothy raised four children and volunteered in her community while they were young. When she was 45 years old and her children had grown up, Dorothy made the brave decision to go back to school and become an elementary school teacher.

Dorothy’s love of music is evident to anyone who meets her. She has a great sense of natural rhythm, loves to sing, and enjoys dancing. Whenever a musical guest at High Point Place asks for a volunteer, her hand pops up. Music allows Dorothy to feel young again.

Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale provided Dorothy with eight weeks’ worth of piano lessons with a local professional music instructor. Dorothy will learn the basics of the piano, as well as a simple song from her childhood. Dorothy is looking forward to this opportunity to get to learn about her longtime passion and further explore her musical side.
